Jodie Sheppard, Australia
Jodie Sheppard shares with ‘GKR Stories’ this week how she returned to training after time off and as a result of her hard work and dedication has accomplished some massive achievements.
“A lot of my story is centred around a dramatic weight loss and the impact that karate has had on my life. At my heaviest, I was 145kg and terribly unhealthy. I am proud to say that I am now down to around 67kg, with the biggest change happening in the last couple of years.
I started training with GKR Karate many years ago, and after taking some time off I returned to training around COVID time. I was driven to return by wanting to reach my original goal of black belt and to be able to defend myself and feel more confident. I was a bit rusty at first, but I kept pushing myself and didn’t talk myself out of going to class on nights where I didn’t feel like it.
I avoided going to a gym because I was concerned about people watching or judging me, but I have never had that concern attending a GKR Karate class. I love that you can go at your own pace, do what you can and push yourself a little bit further each class.
I also never thought I would enjoy sparring or compete in kumite at a tournament. However, I came second at the GKR Karate Australian Titles which was a super proud moment. I am planning on entering the 2024 World Cup also, which would have been unthinkable many years ago!
The flow-on effects in my life outside of karate have been amazing. With two small boys, I find that it is much easier coping with day-to-day activities. I am not waking up in the morning with a sore back or struggling to get up a few flights of stairs, and I am not out of breath just walking down the block. I’ve got more energy and pep in my step; karate has boosted my confidence and self-belief in what I can achieve.
I am now heavily involved in GKR Karate, and I love feeling part of this big family club where I have made lifelong friends. If I am feeling a bit down about myself, or not quite hitting goals, I have people to pick me up and push me to get back on track. I can go into a class and the people there are happy to see me, and I am happy to see them, we train, have a chat and and then go home, I love it.
Since 2021 I’ve lost about 40kg and last December I graded to my Black Belt. My life has really changed in so many ways and I am excited to see what my future karate journey holds.”
